For years, we’ve been investing deeply in AI as the single best way to improve Search and all of our products. We’re excited by the progress, for example with our Search Generative Experience, or SGE, which you can try in Google Labs. AI is also now central to two businesses that have grown rapidly in recent years: our Cloud and Workspace services and our popular subscription service Google One, which is just about to cross 100 million subscribers.

The global population is estimated to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, and the demand for food is projected to surge between 35% and 56%. The agriculture industry is faced with the challenge of meeting these requirements while grappling with dwindling resources, such as water and farmable land.

Major developments this past month demonstrate the rapid progress of generative AI (GenAI). OpenAI has introduced GPT-4 Turbo, which increases speed and reduces cost of their most advanced AI tools. Anthropic, a US-based large language model (LLM) developer, introduced Claude 2.1, closing the performance gap to OpenAI by offering larger context length. Aleph Alpha, a German startup working on sovereign GenAI, closed one of the largest funding rounds for a European technology startup. The capabilities of ChatGPT and its brethren allow them to generate written content, answer queries, hold conversations, summarise texts and develop code with increasing coherence. However, these progressions have sparked intense debates in Europe over suitable governance strategies as the finalisation of the EU AI Act approaches. Discussions range from what terminology should be used - foundation models or GenAI or general-purpose AI or large language models - indicating that much deliberation is still needed before a consensus can be reached. 

It’s been barely a year since the launch of ChatGPT and yet generative AI is now on the lips of most business execs. GenAI has been what Forrester CEO George Colony recently referred to as “the most important technology thunderstorm of the last 40 years,” and tech leaders across the EMEA region seem to agree. AI is now a priority for 90% of IT, DevOps, and platform engineering decision makers, at least according to the Vanson Bourne and Nutanix State of Enterprise AI Report. But as with any rapid advance in technology, questions start to be asked of the existing IT infrastructure and its ability to cope. Are current systems really up to the demands of an AI gold rush?

Finnovation Hack, a trailblazing hackathon at the intersection of finance and technology, took place on December 4th at d’Coque in Luxembourg, with a noteworthy participation of more than 120 professionals and students. This AI-centered event, hosted by the University of Luxembourg's SnT Interdisciplinary Research Center in collaboration with TechSense by The Dots, is an initiative of the Finnovation Hub, the latter being supported by the Ministry of Finance.
