Driven by the global pandemic and the increasing demand for digital services, public sector organizations are rapidly moving to the cloud. The public sector was much more hesitant in embracing cloud technology as security and privacy concerns were major deterrents. However, all that is changing now. The numerous benefits of cloud computing have encouraged more and more public sector organizations to migrate to the cloud. Here’s why the public sector is gradually moving to the cloud.
Convenience
By transitioning to online solutions available in the cloud, public sector organizations will benefit from high availability. For instance, Microsoft says that its cloud-based email platform Office 365 has an up-time of nearly 99%. So, as long as the staff has access to a web browser and Internet connection, they will be able to access their emails. It will also allow employees the flexibility and convenience of working from anywhere in the world.
Increased security
Cloud-native applications are much more secure than on-premise solutions. This is an important factor since data security is a big concern for the public sector. Quality cloud service providers use the highest levels of encryption to ensure that data is safe and no one has unauthorized access. Many also provide advanced security settings tailored to meet the unique needs of the user.
Easy recovery
Another advantage of transitioning to the cloud is that data backup and data recovery become a lot easier. Even if your device, such as your mobile phone or laptop, crashes, you can still access your data through another device. Cloud computing ensures data is backed up in different servers, sometimes even in different geographical locations. Even if there is a server crash, your data is safely stored in multiple locations, which makes a recovery easier and more convenient.
Cost savings
For organizations that are looking to save time and money, the cloud is a great investment. You do not need to invest in physical equipment, maintenance, power, and other expenses related to maintaining on-premise infrastructure. Public sector organizations can therefore minimize their operational and staffing costs. Cloud computing is a pay-as-you-use model, and you do not need to pay for features that you do not use. You only pay for the software or infrastructure that you use.
Better for the environment
Using lesser hardware means that public sector organizations use less power and cause lesser wastage. Adopting cloud computing not only helps cut down costs on maintenance of hardware, it also decreases your carbon footprint. It is a lot more sustainable option, which is also better for the environment.
