The Banking Scene Luxembourg 2022: Banks at the forefront of societal transformation

Rik Coeckelbergs I 8:51 am, 4th February

Alongside Brussels and Amsterdam, Luxembourg is the third pilar of The Banking Scene, a banking community and networking organisation devoted to the financial industry in the Benelux. Its aim is to inspire bankers during their journey into a more innovative, agile and sustainable future.

The third edition of the Luxembourg edition will be held on February 22, 2022 at Confiserie Namur. The half-day event will pick up on the dialogue of the last edition, back in 2020, when trust was the anchor point, and will investigate how banks should pivot their role in society to continue being a trusted partner for their stakeholders in the future.

With ESG as a driving force for change, banks are uniquely placed to assist the shift of a fairer and greener future. This genuine revolution – described by some as more disruptive than the digital transformation tidal wave - will be looked at from both a technology and a more value-based and ethical point of view.

Growing interest and traction at EU level

Investors, customers and regulators are increasingly showing interest in climate-related and environmental, social and governance risks. The banking sector has a central role to play as the industry acts as an important catalyser in reorienting financial flows towards sustainable activities, supporting industries and governments in meeting ESG targets.

As regards financial institutions themselves, a wave of guidance and regulations have started to build up, making the topic a lot more tangible and actionable, calling institutions to integrate ESG risks into their business activities.

In 2020, the European Central Bank published a guide on climate-related and environmental risks, setting 13 supervisory expectations for ECB-directly supervised banks to consider climate and environmental related risks into their business model and strategy, risk appetite and governance, risk management and disclosures.

In Luxembourg, the CSSF has followed by publishing last year circular 21/773 on the management of climate-related and environmental risks for all less significant credit institutions.

The perfect discussion platform

Being well aware that this driving force for a positive change involves more that simply applying ESG recommendations and regulations, the opening keynote will come from Paula Zuccotti.

This ethnographer spoke to people across the world and found a sharp contrast in attitude and experience between customers of established banks and people who had opened accounts with new challenger banks.

Key industry voices from HSBC, BIL, RBC, Citi, BGL, to name a few, will address those challenges, both technological and ethical, and share their expertise at #TBSCONFL22LUX, on stage and during the networking moments.
