Most IoT devices do not come with any in-built security. They are mostly interconnected to other devices, which means that when one device gets hacked, it comprises the security of many devices. So, how can you keep your IoT devices safe?

New technology and gadgets make your life more convenient and efficient. Smart TVs, smart locks, smart thermostats, security cameras and more, all these gadgets add convenience to your lives. All these appliances are connected to the Internet, and billions of such devices make up the Internet of Things. The IoT has become an indispensable part of modern life, but it also has created new opportunities for cybercriminals.

The following tips can help.

Change your default router settings

You will find a lot of people using the same router name as given by the manufacturer. This gives away the make and model of your router compromising your Wi-Fi security. Ensure that you give a unique name to your router that can't be associated with you. Since most IoT devices are connected to your Wi-Fi, securing your Wi-Fi is the first thing you should do. You should also make sure to change the default security and privacy settings. Never use public Wi-Fi for shopping or financial transactions because hackers may easily steal your data.

Use strong encryption and password for your Wi-Fi

Using a strong encryption method, such as WPA2 when setting up your Wi-Fi can ensure greater security for your network and communications. The password you use should also be equally strong. Using an easy-to-guess password only makes the work of a hacker easier. Wherever possible, use a unique password for your Wi-Fi as well as every device connected to it.

Ensure to update your software

Updating your devices with the latest software ensures that you have the latest security patches that reduce the risk of cyberattacks. Most IoT device makers send updates, which should never be ignored. However, if your IoT device does not receive regular updates, checking their websites for updates is a good way to secure your devices.

Disable features that you do not need

Many IoT devices come with a host of features, most of which are enabled by default. Look for features that you do not use and disable them. You do not want to give a hacker easy access to your device.

Use two-factor authentication

When it comes to authentication, two-factor or multi-factor authentication is always more secure. If your IoT device offers two-factor authentication, you should always opt to use it.
